Shatner last appeared in Star Trek Generations as Captain Kirk over twenty years ago. It was recently announced, however, that Patrick Steward will reprise his role as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in the new TV series and so fans were hoping that Shatner might follow Stewart’s lead.

Unfortunately, it looks extremely unlikely that Shatner will be involved in the reboot at all.

“Right now I’m happy doing what I’m doing,” he told the Toronto Star. “I’ve been offered many series over the years. But I haven’t done them because of the commitment of time. And at this stage of my life that’s more valuable than anything else.”

In the past, he has contemplated the idea of making a TV comeback but admitted that it would take “a great deal of money”.

“I don’t know what you’d do with a character who appeared 50, now 51 years ago. You know, I am 51 years older, with all the exigencies of age.”

Shatner continued: “What would Captain Kirk be like 50 years later, with the sagacity of mind, and yet the body doesn’t do what he wants it to do? I mean, it’s an interesting story.”

Television, CBS and Chuck Lorre Productions announced the news in a joint statement. “We are forever grateful to our fans for their support of The Big Bang Theory during the past twelve seasons. We, along with the cast, writers and crew, are extremely appreciative of the show’s success and aim to deliver a final season, and series finale, that will bring The Big Bang Theory to an epic creative close.”

According to Warner Bros. TV, beloved sitcom will be the longest-running multi-camera comedy in TV history when it ends in 2019, with total episode of 279. The show has so far won 7 Emmy awards from 46 nominations with Jim Parsons winning the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series four times. The series stars Parsons, Johnny Galecki, Kaley Cuoco, Simon Helberg, Kunal Nayyar, Mayim Bialik and Melissa Rauch will all return for the final season.

The cast has been open about this year probably being the last, despite the CBS bosses saying they’re discussing to continue the show beyond season 12.

Galecki said last January that he and co-stars were comfortable ending the series with 12^th season.

“The only way we’ve discussed wrapping the show is we’re all going to be very sad when that day comes,” he said. “I think at this point everyone is very comfortable with 12 seasons being a good time to go home and see our families.”
