10 Things You Probably Didn’t Know About “The Big Bang Theory”

Mayim Bialik, Jim Parsons, and Kunal Nayyar in "The Big Bang Theory"

The Big Bang Theory has been, for years now,  the most-watched comedy on television and it is hard to imagine that will change anytime soon. The show will be on air for at least several more years, according to CBS, and we are about to see lot more of Leonard, Sheldon, Penny, Raj, Howard, Bernadette, and Amy. Still, waiting for a new season can be a tough job, so we decided to make it a bit easier by bringing you 10 things you probably didn’t know about The Big Bang Theory. Some of them might surprise you.

Leonard’s Glasses
Leonard wouldn’t be Leonard without his glasses, right? Well, Johnny Galecki who plays the character doesn’t really need them so he wears glasses with no lenses when he is on set.

Theremin
In the episode The Bus Pants Utilization, Jim Parsons’ character Sheldon can be seen playing an instrument called theremin. It isn’t some random gag since Parsons also plays the instrument in real life.

Science Advisor
In order to avoid making mistakes when it comes to various scientific elements included in the show, the writers have a science advisor in David Saltzberg, physics and astronomy professor at UCLA. Saltzberg is also present at the set, in case the cast has some questions about the specifics.

Dr. Amy Farrah Fowler
Speaking of UCLA. Mayim Bialik, who plays Amy Farrah Fowler, actually has a Ph.D. in neuroscience obtained at this university.

Penny’s Purse
Penny has been wearing the same purse since the show’s second episode. Once you notice this, it can’t be unnoticed.

Bazinga!
Sheldon’s catchphrase “Bazinga!” supposed to be an inside joke. Stephen Engel, one of the The Big Bang Theory writers, often used the phrase on set when playing practical jokes on other crew members, so the rest of the writing team decided to work it into the show for gags. “Bazinga!” eventually became one of Sheldon’s trademarks on the sitcom.

Sheldon Leonard
Creators of the show, Chuck Lorre, and Bill Prady, decided to name two main characters in The Big Bang Theory as an homage to Hollywood actor Sheldon Leonard, whom they both admired.

William Shatner
We have seen numerous famous celebrities appearing as guest stars on The Big Bang Theory including Bill Gates, Mark Hamil, George Takei, Leonard Nimoy, and Wil Wheaton. But there was one star the show couldn’t get. William Shatner was offered the opportunity to appear on the show but decided to turn it down as the showrunners wanted him to play an exaggerated version of himself.

Shy Raj
You probably remember that early in the show the character of Rajesh Koothrappali could only talk with women when he was drunk. It turns out that creator Bill Prady based this on one of his former co-workers who was so shy that he always need a few drinks before getting into a conversation with someone.

Keys to Success
According to the shows creative team, storylines of The Big Bang Theory aren’t planned far ahead which allows them to remain current and always have “fresh” jokes.
