Our grandparents are always complaining that Doctor Who “isn’t as scary as it used to be.” The pepper-pot Daleks might have had them hiding behind the sofa 40 years ago, but these days, kids are used to seeing far worse. There is no doubt, however, that these 5 episodes had us all sleeping with the light on.
The Empty Child
All the way back when Christopher Eccleston was the Doctor in 2005, Steven Moffatt guest-wrote “The Empty Child.” Gas Mask zombies in WWII calling out “Are you my mummy?” injected some much needed fear-factor into the show.

Blink
“Whatever you do… don’t blink!” The Weeping Angels can send you back in time with a simple touch. If you look at them, they remain motionless, but if you look away, or so much as blink, they can come and get you. These statues are creepy and sinister, making the episode one of the scariest to air.

The Impossible Planet
An evil presence was detected at Sanctuary Base 6 on Krop Tor, which turned out to be the devil himself. The double-episode on Krop Top is one of the most exciting and jumpiest double-episodes of the series.

Silence in the Library
The Vashta Nerada appear as shadows to hunt. If they catch you, they’ll strip your flesh to the bone. It’s all very unsettling.

The Waters on Mars
An organism, known as ‘The Flood’ enters the water supply on Mars and transforms the infected into creepy zombie-like creatures. It’s as much a concept for a horror show as for a family sci-fi series.
