A Prequel to “Practical Magic” is Coming to HBO Max

Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman in "Practical Magic"

All classic stories have to start somewhere.

1998’s Practical Magic told the story of sisters Sally and Gillian, who were played by Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman. The pair, who are witches, come from a family of women who bear a curse causing the men they fall in love with to die.

We may now get an idea of where that curse began, thanks to a new series which is set to explore the film’s origins.

HBO’s new streaming service, HBO Max, has ordered a prequel series entitled Rules of Magic, which will be set in the ‘60s.

It will follow the lives of a younger Franny and Jet, who were portrayed by Stockard Channing and Dianne West in the film.

Melissa Rosenberg and Dana Baratt, who helmed Marvel’s Jessica Jones for Netflix, will be behind Rules of Magic for which HBO Max has additionally ordered a writers’ room with a 10-script order.
