George R. Stewart’s sci-fi novel Earth Abides is getting its TV adaptation, and MGM+ found a perfect person to lead it. Vikings star Alexander Ludwig will play a young geologist living a solitary life in the wake of a mysterious plague that almost wiped out the entire human race.

Todd Komarnicki adapted Stewart’s book to the screen, and here’s what we can expect from this six-episode series.

“When a plague of unprecedented virulence sweeps the globe, the human race is all but wiped out. In the aftermath, as the great machine of civilization slowly and inexorably breaks down, only a few shattered survivors remain to struggle against the slide into extinction,” reads the official synopsis.

Ludwig will lead the cast in the role of the brilliant young geologist Ish, who comes to learn there is no one left alive but him after waking up from a coma in the wake of a plague that swept the globe.

Earth Abides will feature six episodes and it’s eying a late 2024 debut after filming in Vancouver next month. It will mark Ludwig’s first major TV role since the wrestling drama Heels co-starring Stephen Amell was canceled by Starz last year after two seasons.
