Back in September, Amazon announced that ads would soon become a part of their streaming service Prime Video, and they finally made things official. Amazon officially announced that the users of this streaming service will start seeing ads from January 29, 2024.

Prime Video delivered the news in a newsletter shared with their subscribers, announcing that their movies and TV shows will include limited advertisements starting January 29.

“This will allow us to continue investing in compelling content and keep increasing that investment over a long period of time. We aim to have meaningfully fewer ads than linear TV and other streaming TV providers,” reads Amazon’s official statement.

Amazon ads will initially roll out in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Canada, but France, Italy, Spain, Mexico, and Australia will follow suit later in the year. The ad-free plan will be available for an additional $2.99 per month. Purchased or rented content also won’t feature commercials.

Prime Video isn’t the first streamer to embrace a dual subscription-ad model. It’s following in the footsteps of Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, and Max, all of which have ads on their most affordable plans, while Apple TV+ remains the only major streaming service without them.
