Amazon Prime Video has been exploring the idea of expanding the Legally Blonde universe in recent months, and they finally made things official. The streaming giant ordered a prequel series inspired by the beloved 2000s comedy, set during Elle Woods’ high school years.

This Legally Blonde prequel hails from creator, showrunner, and executive producer Laura Kittrell (Insecure), and it’s set years before the original film. It will see Elle navigate her time in high school before becoming the iconic young woman who went to Harvard Law to pursue a legal career in the original film.

Reese Witherspoon, who played Elle Woods in Legally Blonde and its sequel Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde, is coming on board as one of the executive producers via Hello Sunshine, and she can’t wait to join forces with Amazon to revive this beloved franchise.

“I truly couldn’t be more excited about this series! Fans will get to know how Elle Woods navigated her world as a teenager with her distinct personality and ingenuity, in ways that only our beloved Elle could do. What could be better than that?!” she said in a statement.

This isn’t the only Legally Blonde spin-off that Amazon Prime Video has in development. Earlier this year, it was reported that the Gossip Girl duo Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage are plotting another series set in this universe.
