My Lady Jane became quite a fan favorite since its premiere earlier this summer, but its life has been pretty short-lived. Amazon Prime Video made an unexpected decision to cancel this period drama after a single season.
My Lady Jane put a twist on the tale of the young Tudor noblewoman Lady Jane Grey, who claimed the throne of England for nine days before being beheaded in 1553. This series reimagines Jane as a damsel in distress who saves herself and explores “an epic tale of true love and high adventure set in an alt-universe of action, history, fantasy, comedy, romance, and rompy-pompy”, according to its official logline.
Emily Bader led the cast of this series as Jane, and she was joined by Edward Bluemel, Jordan Peters, Anna Chancellor, Dominic Cooper, Kate O’Flynn, Rob Brydon, Abbie Hern, Isabella Brownson, Robyn Betteridge, Henry Ashton, Máiréad Tyers, and Jim Broadbent in supporting roles.
The eight-episode series premiered on Amazon Prime Video on June 27 to critical acclaim but struggled to find a larger audience. Gemma Burgess created this period drama for Amazon, drawing inspiration from the book of the same name by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows, and served as its co-showrunner with Meredith Glynn.
