American Rust changed several hands since its premiere on Showtime in 2021, and another major shift is underway. The second season of Jeff Daniels’ crime drama will premiere this March on Amazon Prime Video, despite initially being picked up by Amazon Freevee.

Based on Philipp Meyer’s hit debut novel, American Rust has been described as “the story of survival and transcendence told through the eyes of the complicated and compromised chief of police Del Harris of a Pennsylvania Rust Belt town full of good people making bad choices.”

Harris must go to great lengths when the son of the woman he loves is accused of murder and decide how much he’s willing to put on the line to protect his life.

In addition to Daniels in the lead role, the cast of this project also includes Maura Tierney, David Alvarez, Bill Camp, Julia Mayorga, Alex Neustaedter, Mark Pellegrino, and Rob Yang.

The show’s second season will launch under the title American Rust: Broken Justice on March 28 with all ten episodes. Amazon Freevee picked up this series following the Showtime cancelation in 2022, but it was later moved to Amazon Prime Video.

American Rust is the latest show to move from Freevee to Prime Video, following the footsteps of Leverage: Redemption and Bosch: Legacy, raising questions about the future of Amazon’s free, ad-supported streaming service.
