Based on a True Story was renewed for Season 2 by Peacock, but it will experience a major creative overhaul before it comes back. The comedy thriller series led by Kaley Cuoco and Chris Messina found a new showrunner in Annie Weisman.

Peacock’s official synopsis describes Based on a True Story as a dark comedic thriller about a realtor (Kaley Cuoco), a former tennis star (Chris Messina), and a plumber (Tom Bateman), who seize a unique opportunity to capitalize on America’s obsession with true crime.

Their true crime adventures will continue in the upcoming second season, but the original creator Craig Rosenberg will no longer serve as its showrunner. He decided to step down to focus on other projects, and he’ll be replaced by Annie Weisman.

Based on a True Story will be in safe hands going forward since Weisman has a pretty impressive track record. She’s fresh off serving as creator, executive producer, and showrunner of the Apple TV+ series Physical, which ended its run after three seasons last fall. Her credits also include Fox’s Almost Family and Hulu’s The Path.

Rosenberg remains on board as one of the show’s executive producers, along with Weisman, Cuoco, Messina, Alex Buono, Jaclyn Moore, plus Jason Bateman and Michael Costigan of Aggregate Films.
