It’s been years since we’ve seen Benedict Cumberbatch play a major TV role, but that will change pretty soon. The first trailer for his Netflix mini-series is here, and it sees the Emmy-winning actor playing a grieving puppeteer struggling with the disappearance of his son.

Cumberbatch leads this series as one of New York’s leading puppeteers, Vincent, whose life unravels after his son goes missing on his way to school.

“Struggling to cope with the loss of his son, Edgar, Vincent becomes increasingly distressed and volatile. Full of self-loathing and guilt over Edgar’s disappearance, he clings to his son’s drawings of a blue monster puppet, Eric, convinced that if he can get Eric on TV, then Edgar will come home,” reads Netflix’s official logline.

Eric was created for Netflix by Abi Morgan, whose work as a writer includes acclaimed films The Iron Lady and Suffragette. She came on board as writer and executive producer alongside Cumberbatch, director Lucy Forbes, plus Jane Featherstone, and Lucy Dyke.

In addition to Cumberbatch in the lead role, Eric also stars Gaby Hoffmann, Ivan Howe, McKinley Belcher III, Roberta Colindrez, and Jeff Hephner. It will feature a total of six episodes, set to premiere on Netflix on May 30.
