Shannen Doherty, the star of the cult series Beverly Hills 90210 and Charmed, passed away at 53. She died after years of a very open and long battle with cancer, and many of her former co-stars and peers sent condolences to her loved ones.
Doherty rose to prominence during the 90s, while playing angsty teen Brenda Walsh on Beverly Hills 90210. She later reprised this role in 90210 and BH90210 and gave us another iconic 90s TV character while playing Prue Halliwell in Charmed. Her notable credits also include roles in films Girls Just Want to Have Fun and Heathers and TV shows Little House on the Prairie and Our House.
Doherty passed away on July 13 at her home in Malibu, California, and her publicist Leslie Sloane released an official statement confirming her death.
“She lost her battle with cancer after many years of fighting the disease. The devoted daughter, sister, aunt, and friend was surrounded by her loved ones as well as her dog, Bowie. The family asks for their privacy at this time so they can grieve in peace,” said Sloane.
Doherty has been diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015, and she’s been very candid about her battle. She raised funds for cancer research and spoke openly about everything she’s been true in an attempt to raise awareness about this disease.
