CBS brought S.W.A.T. back from the dead once in the past, and they did it again! Despite announcing this procedural action drama would come to an end with its seventh season, CBS reversed its decision and renewed it for Season 8.

Strong ratings propelled S.W.A.T. to another season, and CBS Entertainment’s president Amy Reisenbach confirmed its renewal. She explained their decision to reverse its cancelation by saying they “always ‘stay liquid’ and love a good dramatic twist”, and praised the S.W.A.T. cast and crew for keeping the show relevant and action-packed.

Andrew Dettmann, who serves as the executive producer and co-showrunner alongside Shawn Ryan, described its renewal as a “well-deserved payoff for all the time, energy, and effort” they put into this show.

“Shemar [Moore] and I had many conversations throughout the production of season seven, confident that if we continued to tell great stories punctuated by SWAT’s signature action, our amazing fans would stay with us, giving us a good shot at another season,” said Dettmann in a statement.

This is the second time S.W.A.T. escaped cancelation in less than a year. CBS initially axed it in May 2023 only to renew it a few days later. Season 7 was supposed to be its last before CBS decided to continue this story after the new installment attracted strong viewership following its premiere on February 16.
