Lance Reddick originated the character of Zeus in the Disney+ series Percy Jackson and the Olympians, but his tragic passing left this role vacant. Courtney B. Vance agreed to step in as Zeus in Season 2, saying he’ll be giving Reddick “a heavenly hug” after he left us too soon.

Based on Rick Riordan’s book series of the same name, Percy Jackson and the Olympians centers on a young demigod who must embark on an extraordinary quest after discovering he’s secretly the son of the Greek god Poseidon.

Season 1 revolved around Percy Jackson trying to restore order to Olympus after Zeus accused him of stealing his thunderbolt. The late Lance Reddick played the supreme Greek god, and he’ll be replaced by Courtney B. Vance after passing away shortly after Season 1 wrapped up production

Vance said he’s excited to join the extraordinary cast of this hit series, filled with characters beloved all around the world.

“There are few moments in an actor’s career when you can honestly say that you’re about to board a series that has such a devoted fan base… I know that stepping into this role of Zeus will be a memorable experience and I’ll be giving my brother, Lance Reddick, who left us way too soon, a heavenly hug,” he said in a statement.
