After his previous two TV shows, The Following and I Love Dick, got canceled, Kevin Bacon is returning to television with a new crime drama on Showtime. The network announced on Friday that they have handed a series order to City on a Hill, which is based on an original idea by Ben Affleck and Chuck MacLean. The first season of the series will have 12 episodes with a premiere date set for 2019 with Affleck serving as an executive producer alongside Matt Damon.

City on a Hill tells the story about crime and corruption that overwhelmed Boston in the early 90s and focuses on a fictional “Boston Miracle” police operation. Kevin Bacon will star as a corrupt FBI veteran Jackie Rhodes who forms an alliance with District Attorney Decourcy Ward played by Aldis Hodge. The rest of the cast includes Jonathan Tucker, Jill Hennessy, Kevin Chapman, Lauren E. Banks, Mark O’Brien, and Amanda Clayton.

Chuck MacLean wrote the script for the series while Michael Cuesta (Six Feet Under, Dexter, Blue Bloods, and Homeland) directed the pilot.

“City on a Hill has the veneer of a classic Boston cops-and-robbers drama but actually dives headfirst into challenging the very institutions it depicts,” – said Showtime CEO David Nevins about the project. “In reality, the series is a penetrating look at the larger criminal justice system and those who operate within it, with mesmerizing performances by Kevin Bacon and Aldis Hodge anchoring the suspense.”
