Blue Beetle introduced us to one of DC Studios’ latest superheroes last year, and his journey will soon continue. Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios are plotting an animated series set in the same universe as the 2023 film starring Xolo Maridueña.

Blue Beetle chronicled the origin story of a recent college graduate Jaime Reyes, whose life takes a wild turn when an alien Scarab latches onto him. After being bestowed with an armor that grants him superpowers, he decides to use them for good and become a superhero known as Blue Beetle.

Blue Beetle wasn’t exactly a success story for DC, and it barely earned back its budget after hitting the theaters in the face of the Hollywood labor disputes last summer. It’s currently the lowest-grossing film in the DCEU, with $131 million grossed worldwide.

Not much is known about its animated version, but it will reportedly divert from telling the same story, while potentially setting the stage for Blue Beetle’s return to the big screen.

Miguel Puga (The Casagrandes) will serve as a showrunner of this series, while Cristian Martinez (Good Trouble) is joining him as a writer. Angel Manuel Soto and Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, who directed and wrote the original film, are joining them as executive producers.
