Despite having a star-studded cast and receiving positive reviews, American Born Chinese won’t be coming back for another chapter. The action fantasy series, which starred Oscar winners Ke Huy Quan and Michelle Yeoh, has been canceled by Disney+ after a single season.

According to Disney’s official logline, American Born Chinese chronicles the trials and tribulations of a regular American teenager, whose life is forever changed when he befriends a new foreign student, who turns out to be the son of a mythological god Monkey King. The series was based on Gene Luen Yang’s groundbreaking graphic novel of the same name.

American Born Chinese was led by Ben Wang as Jin Wang and Jimmy Liu as Sun Wei-Chen. The cast also included Oscar winners Ke Huy Quan and Michelle Yeoh, in addition to Yeo Yann Yann, Chin Han, Sydney Taylor, and Daniel Wu, plus guest stars Stephanie Hsu, Jimmy O. Yang, and Poppy Liu.

Disney+ didn’t give a reason for the show’s cancelation, but it’s likely that low viewership played a part. The streamer never released viewership numbers for this show, but it’s safe to assume it didn’t attract a large enough audience to grant a renewal since it never made it to the weekly Nielsen Top 10 streaming rankings.
