Eli Roth always enjoyed pushing the boundaries of the horror genre, and his next project is the most inventive one yet. He joined forces with Meta for The Faceless Lady, billed as the first known live-action VR series.

The six-episode series is inspired by 17th-century Irish folklore and centers on Lady Margaret Hodnett. This series puts a modern twist on myths and legends about “The Faceless Lady”, who haunted the visitors of Cork’s Belvelly Castle by stalking them through mirrors, windows, and other reflective surfaces.

The cast of The Faceless Lady includes Tara Lee, Staz Nair, Daisy Jelley, Mei Henri, Ugo Onwughalu, Sophie Rebecca-Jones, and Ned Dennehy. Roth serves as its executive producer, while Jerome Velinsky wrote the series and John William Ross came on board to direct it.

Roth said it’s been an incredible experience to partner with Meta for this project, and added he can’t wait for fans to enjoy virtual reality horror in this form.

“Seeing the reaction to ‘Trick-VR-Treat’ and ‘Be Mine’ showed what an appetite genre fans have for this medium and how VR users are experiencing horror through the headset. A VR horror episodic series will scare viewers in a way this medium has never seen before,” he said in a statement.
