Forest Whitaker is one of many Hollywood superstars to make a shift to television in recent years, and he just landed a role in another high-profile project. Godfather of Harlem star will reunite with MGM+ for the upcoming suspense thriller series Emperor of Ocean Park.

Inspired by Stephen L. Carter’s bestselling novel of the same name, this series will center on Talcott Garland (Grantham Coleman), an Ivy League law professor whose life turns upside down when his father, Judge Oliver Garland (Whitaker), dies of an apparent heart attack.

Whitaker’s character has been described as a stern, intelligent, calculating, and proud man, who cemented his legacy as a formidable figure in the national judicial system and often had to navigate unwelcoming and hostile environments.

Sherman Payne, who co-created this series alongside John Wells, confirmed Whitaker’s casting and said he’s incredibly excited to join forces with the legendary actor.

“Portraying the patriarch of our onscreen family, Forest brings thoughtfulness, leadership, and unimpeachable talent to an already incredible cast… Forest has been my dream candidate for this role, and it is truly humbling that we are now working together to bring this story to life,” said Payne in the statement.

Tiffany Mack and Paulina Lule will also star in this series alongside Whitaker and Coleman, while the rest of the supporting cast is yet to be announced.
