Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz have jumped in to defend the upcoming Buffy The Vampire Slayer reboot.

Fans of the original show have been naturally skeptical about the reboot, claiming that it is unnecessary and unwanted. Many have claimed that the original cast are irreplaceable and contest that there is “only one Buffy.” Backlash has persisted despite the creators’ promise that the reboot will not aim to replicate the original series, but will be a new version with a new slayer for a new era.

Sarah Michelle Gellar, aka the OG slayer herself, has defended the reboot alongside co-star David Boreanaz, the slayer’s brooding love interest, Angel.

“At the end of the day, it’s all about great storytelling,” she told PEOPLE. “If a story lives on, then I think it should be told in any incarnation it can be told in.”

Boreanaz added: “Come on, guys. It’s a good thing. Let’s just embrace [it]. I’m very happy for them. They want to embrace a new generation, something new … I’m all for it. I think it’s fantastic. Good for them. I hope that it becomes huge and successful.”

Gellar agreed with her co-star and admitted: “I’ll be honest, initially I was like, ‘Nooo! Don’t touch the sacred text!’ But the more I learned about it, the more excited I got.”

“I’m excited that there is a female showrunner and that she’s a woman of color writing about a woman of color. So I’m actually really pumped for it,” she said.

If it’s good enough for Buffy and Angel, then it’s good enough for us!
