Most networks wait until the end of the first season to see if a rookie show is worthy of renewal, but FX is betting it all on The Old Man. Less than two weeks after its premiere, the network already renewed this series led by Jeff Bridges for another season.
The Old Man is based on Thomas Perry’s book of the same name, and it follows a former CIA operative who’s been living off the grid for three decades. After an assassin breaks into his home and tries to take him out, he’s forced to go on the run.
The Old Man was originally announced back in 2019, but it took a while to get the project off the ground. Production initially shut down in mid-March 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. It was halted again in October 2020 due to Bridges’ lymphoma diagnosis and resumed after the actor announced his cancer was in remission.
In addition to Bridges, The Old Man also stars John Lithgow, Amy Brenneman, and Alia Shawkat. Jonathan E. Steinberg and Robert Levine developed the series for FX, and the network’s entertainment president Eric Schrier praised them for delivering “on the powerful intrigue and breathtaking action of Thomas Perry’s book” with their adaptation.
