It has been over three months since the highly-anticipated Game of Thrones finale aired on HBO. The final season was met with backlash and after the last episode aired, a petition was started to have the entire season remade.

Now, 20 weeks after the final episode landed, showrunners David Benioff and DB Weiss have finally broken their silence regarding the backlash they have received for season 8.

“It’s like in Persian rugs, it’s tradition that you make a little mistake when making the rug, because only God can do anything perfect, so for us I guess that just was our [mistake],” Benioff told Star Channel.

“That’s why I put the coffee cup there. It was a conscious, concerted statement of our imperfection,” Weiss added in jest.

Weiss’ joke of course references the infamous scene where one of the actors accidentally left a Starbucks coffee cup on the table. The scene somehow made the final cut and fans were quick to catch onto the mistake.

“We were concentrating so much on Daenerys and Jon Snow that we just didn’t see this coffee cup right in the middle,” Benioff explained. “So, at first I couldn’t believe it, and then it was kind of embarrassment, because how did we not see this coffee cup in the middle of the shot? And then, eventually, it was just funny. This one is just a mistake, and it’s kind of funny to us now.”

Although neither of the showrunners addressed the petition, at least we finally get some clarity on the coffee cup blunder. It’s just a shame we will never know who was the culprit.
