The final season of Game of Thrones debuts next month and we’re not the only ones having mixed feelings.

For television fans, it’s the culmination of an 8 year journey to see who finally sits on the Iron Throne. But for book fans, the journey has been far longer.

The first book in the A Song of Ice and Fire saga was published in 1996, and author George R.R. Martin is still in the midst of writing the 6th book, The Winds of Winter.

Seven novels have been planned in the series, but with the rate at which Martin has been writing, it has meant that the HBO series surpassed its written base material.

The 70-year-old has admitted that fans getting to see the Game of Thrones ending in the next couple of months, while his book’s release date is not yet set in stone, is giving him “mixed feelings”.

“Obviously, I wished I finished these books sooner so the show hadn’t gotten ahead of me. I never anticipated that,” he told Entertainment Weekly.

The final season of Game of Thrones premieres on the 14th of April. We hope Martin will be watching.
