George R.R. Martin teased several potential Game of Thrones spin-offs over the years, and some of them will look much different than we’ve expected. The famous author revealed he’s plotting three animated spin-offs with HBO, including Nine Voyages.
Martin wrapped up 2023 by writing a lengthy blog post, and one of the topics that came up was the future of the Game of Thrones franchise. The acclaimed writer opened up about his love for animated series and singled out Netflix’s Blue Eye Samurai and Love, Death, And Robots as two of his recent favorites.
Martin also revealed that some of his future Game of Thrones spin-offs will be animated because budgetary “budgetary constraints would likely have made a live-action version prohibitively expensive.”
“As it happens, HBO and I have our own animated projects, set in the world of A Song of Ice & Fire. None of them have been greenlit yet, but I think we are getting close to taking the next step with a couple of them,” wrote Martin.
The writer revealed he’s currently plotting three animated shows with HBO, starting with Nine Voyages, which centers on Corlys Velaryon and his adventures across Essos abroad the legendary Sea Snake ship.
