Gillian Flynn’s novels have already produced several successful adaptations, and another one is on the way! The famous author is joining forces with HBO to develop a limited series adaptation of Dark Places, marking her second collaboration after Sharp Objects.
Dark Places centers on Libby Day, the sole survivor of the “Satan Sacrifice of Kinnakee, Kansas”, that took the lives of her mother and two sisters. She famously testified that her teen brother was the killer, but she must reexamine her past years later after she meets a mother/daughter duo of true crime “detectives”, who are convinced he’s innocent.
Flynn’s novels Sharp Objects and Gone Girl were both adapted into critically acclaimed projects, but that wasn’t the case with Dark Places. The 2015 adaptation starring Charlize Theron, Christina Hendricks, Nicholas Hoult, and Chloë Grace Moretz was a box office bomb, and it was met with mixed reviews.
Flynn is getting a second chance at adapting her hit novel, and she’s coming on board as co-creator, writer, and co-showrunner this time around. She’ll be joined by co-creators and writers Guerrin Gardner and Brett Johnson, with Johnson also serving as co-showrunner.
Flynn previously worked with HBO on the adaptation of Sharp Objects, which starred Amy Adams and received multiple Emmy and Golden Globe nominations.
