The Gotham Awards are one of the biggest celebrations of independent cinema, and they’re finally branching out. The Gotham Film & Media Institute announced they’re launching the inaugural Gotham TV Awards, and the first ceremony will take place this June.

The first edition of Gotham TV Awards will take place on June 4 in New York City, and awards will be handed out in eight categories. They’ll primarily focus on celebrating new shows and their best performances, judging by the categories they’re launching the ceremony with.

In addition to breakthrough comedy series, breakthrough drama series, breakthrough limited series, and breakthrough nonfiction series, the Gotham TV Awards will be handed out in three acting fields – outstanding performance in a comedy series, outstanding performance in a drama series, and outstanding performance in a limited series. An Audience Award will also be there to give voice to the people.

The Gotham Awards featured several TV categories in recent years, and the executive director Jeffrey Sharp explained they decided to launch a separate ceremony after it became clear their TV awards could have an even greater impact.

“We sense a unique opportunity to widen our reach by expanding our competitive categories and tributes in a show focused solely on creators of episodic TV, limited series, and non-theatrical streaming movies,” said Sharp in a press release.
