“Gotham” Renewed for Fifth and Final Season

Donal Logue and Ben McKenzie in "Gotham"

Batman origin series, Gotham, will return for the fifth season on Fox. The bad news is that this will be also the show’s last season. According to The Hollywood Reporter, unlike previous seasons, season five will only have 13 episodes with the premiere date set for fall of 2018. The final season of Gotham will follow Bruce Wayne’s transformation into the caped crusader.

Developed by Bruno Heller (Rome and The Mentalist), Gotham premiered in September 2014 on Fox. The series initially supposed to focus on James Gordon (Ben McKenzie) and his early days as a member of Gotham City Police Department, but later incorporated the character of Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz). Gotham also included prequel stories of several villains connected to Batman including The Oswald Cobblepot/Penguin (Lord Taylor), Edward Nygma/The Riddler (Cory Michael Smith), Butch Gilzean/Solomon Grundy (Drew Powell), Ra’s Ah Ghul (Alexander Siddig), and Catwoman (Camren Bicondova).

It was also long rumored that character Jeremiah Valeska (Cameron Monaghan) will turn out to be The Joker. Still, despite the many similarities Jeremiah has to The Clown Prince of Crime, that won’t be the case.

“Pure green was off-limits to us (as well as the name “Joker”), a decision from high-up as they wanted to reserve these for films,” explained Monaghan recently. “A decision which ultimately I respect. They did not want to dilute the very lucrative brand. It allowed for creativity on our end.”

Although Gotham received generally positive reviews from the critics during its run, the series had real problems with the ratings. Season one had 7.56 million viewers on average, but each subsequent season saw ratings slip drastically. Season fourth, which is set to conclude on May 17, has averaged less than 3 million viewers.
