Grey’s Anatomy is the longest-running primetime medical drama in TV history, and it’s getting ready to extend its record. Despite experiencing a major revamp in Season 20, the show’s future is looking bright, and ABC just renewed it for its 21st season.

The hit medical drama returned to ABC on March 14 for its Season 20, after facing several major bumps on the road. The episode count was reduced to ten in the face of the labor disputes in Hollywood last year, while Meg Marinis took over as showrunner from Krista Vernoff.

Season 20 also lost several fan favorites, including Kelly McCreary and Scott Speedman. It also marked the second season with the reduced involvement from Ellen Pompeo as Meredith Grey, who’s only featured as a supporting player, letting Chandra Wilson, James Pickens, Jr., Kevin McKidd, Caterina Scorsone, Camilla Luddington, and Kim Raver lead the way.

Despite all these obstacles, Grey’s Anatomy remains one of ABC’s biggest hits, and its creator Shonda Rhimes expressed gratitude to fans who have propelled it into a historic 21st season. She also praised the new showrunner Meg Marinis for keeping the show “vibrant, compelling, and alive.”

Season 21 of Grey’s Anatomy will most likely feature 18 episodes and ABC is expected to renew its deals with its cast ahead of its release.
