Despite boasting an A-list creative team and impressive cast, The Franchise struggled to make a splash after premiering on HBO this fall. The satirical comedy about the making of a fictional superhero movie won’t be coming back for another ride after HBO announced its cancelation.
The Franchise was created for HBO by Jon Brown, who served as its executive producer alongside Armando Iannucci (Veep) and Sam Mendes (Skyfall). It offered a behind-the-scenes look at the making of a fictional superhero movie from the vantage point of the overworked first assistant director Daniel Kumar, who must deal with day-to-day chaos while trying to keep this project on track.
Himesh Patel led the ensemble cast of The Franchise, along with Aya Cash, Jessica Hynes, Billy Magnussen, Lolly Adefope, Darren Goldstein, Isaac Powell, Richard E. Grant, and Daniel Brühl.
It’s been over a month since the first season of The Franchise ended its run in late November, and an HBO spokesperson released an official statement announcing the show’s cancelation:
“We’re so grateful to have had the opportunity to work with the tremendously talented team behind ‘The Franchise,’ especially Sam Mendes, Jon Brown, Armando Iannucci, and this hilarious ensemble of actors. While we won’t be moving forward with another season, we look forward to collaborating with all of them in the future.”
