The release date of HBO’s long-awaited series The Sympathizer is just two weeks away, and they’re doing a great job building up the hype. The new teaser for this espionage thriller is here, and it gives us a closer look at the adaptation of Viet Thanh Nguyen’s novel.

Based on Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning book of the same name, The Sympathizer will take us to the final days of the Vietnam War. HBO’s official logline describes it as an espionage thriller and cross-culture satire about the adventures of a half-Vietnamese communist spy, who comes to learn that his spying days still aren’t behind him after finding refuge in Los Angeles.

Hoa Xuande will lead the cast as the Captain, and he’ll be joined by the recent Oscar winner Robert Downey Jr. in several antagonist roles. Fred Nguyen Khan, Toan Le, Phanxine, Vy Le, Ky Duyen, Kieu Chinh, Duy Nguyen, Alan Trong, Sandra Oh, and Marine Delterme also star.

Park Chan-wook, the acclaimed South Korean director of Oldboy and The Handmaiden, serves as co-creator and co-showrunner of this series alongside Don McKellar, in addition to directing the first three episodes.

The Sympathizer will feature seven episodes, set to premiere on HBO on April 14.
