Fans of Crazy Rich Asians have been waiting for this story to continue ever since this hit rom-com came out, and it seems their prayers will soon be answered. HBO chairmen and CEO Casey Bloys said they’re in the early stages of developing a Crazy Rich Asians spin-off series.
Bloys mentioned HBO’s Crazy Rich Asians series in a recent interview with Variety when asked what new projects they have in development. He also added they’re developing series inspired by several other high-profile IPs, including The Conjuring and Green Lantern.
Bloys didn’t share any more details about this project, but it makes sense for HBO to plot another project in the Crazy Rich Asians universe given the success of the original film. It became the highest-grossing romantic comedy of the 2010s, earning $238 million on a budget of $30 million, in addition to receiving multiple awards and nominations.
Based on Kevin Kwan’s hit book, Crazy Rich Asians starred Constance Wu as a working-class Chinese-American woman, who’s shocked to discover that her boyfriend Nick (Henry Golding) comes from Singapore’s richest family after traveling there for his best friend’s wedding.
Ever since the first film came out, Warner Bros. has been plotting two follow-up sequels, China Rich Girlfriend and Rich People Problems, along with a spin-off about Gemma Chan’s character Astrid, but their future remains uncertain.
