After months of casting rumors surrounding the new Harry Potter series, HBO finally made things official. They announced the first roster of cast members joining this project, including John Lithgow, Nick Frost, Janet McTeer, and Paapa Essiedu.

HBO confirmed the casting of John Lithgow (The Crown) as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer (The White Queen) as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu (I May Destroy You) as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost (Hot Fuzz) as Rubeus Hagrid, after it was previously reported they’re in talks to join the show. The cast will also include Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell and Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch.

Francesca Gardiner, showrunner and executive producer, and Mark Mylod, director of multiple episodes and executive producer, released an official statement announcing the show’s cast, adding, “We’re delighted to have such extraordinary talent onboard, and we can’t wait to see them bring these beloved characters to new life.”

Based on J.K. Rowling’s beloved book series, HBO’s new take on Harry Potter has been described as “a faithful adaptation”, which will explore every corner of the Wizarding World. It hails from writer Francesca Gardiner, who serves as its showrunner and one of the executive producers alongside Rowling, Mark Mylod, Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts, and David Heyman.
