True Detective: Night Country became the most-watched season of this anthology series following its explosive finale, and its renewal was imminent. HBO renewed it just a few days after Season 4 wrapped up, after showrunner Issa López agreed to return for another ride.
Night Country starred Jodie Foster and Kali Reis as two detectives who must dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice in their hometown of Ennis, Alaska after a group of men working at the Tsalal Arctic Research Station have been found frozen to death.
Night Country was embraced by critics and fans alike, and it became the most-watched season of True Detective to date, with 12.7 million cross-platform viewers.
López described Night Country as the most beautiful collaboration and adventure of her entire creative life and added she’s looking forward to reuniting with HBO.
“HBO trusted my vision all the way, and the idea of bringing to life a new incarnation of True Detective with Casey [Bloys], Francesca [Orsi], and the whole team is a dream come true. I can’t wait to go again,” she said in a statement.
In addition to agreeing to return for another season of True Detective, López also signed an overall multi-year deal with the network, agreeing to create new content for HBO and Max.
