Here’s That Ridiculously Catchy Song From “Russian Doll”

Natasha Lyonne in "Russian Doll"

Remember that song that played at the start of each time loop throughout the entire series of Russian Doll? You know, the one that got stuck in your head all day and made you feel like you might just be stuck on loop too? Well here it is:

The song is “Gotta Get Up” by Harry Nilsson from his 1971’s album Nilsson Schmilsson. It sounds cheerful but it’s actually about the pains of getting older and constantly approaching death. Kind of perfect for the series, right?

“There was always a kind of ending that was unpleasant, that was percolating under the surface of his songs, even at their most upbeat and certainly at their darkest,” co-creator Natasha Lyone told the New York Times.

She also explained that the song managed to capture the out-of-touch-but-also-current feel they were trying to achieve. She said that she wanted to “touch something that was out of time, and a New York and East Village that was out of time.”

We only just finished getting “I Got You Babe” out of our heads after watching Groundhog Day 10 years ago so we’re looking forward to a whole new decade of “Gotta Get Up” on loop.

Thanks guys.
