House of the Dragon is finally returning for its second season this Sunday, and HBO celebrated its comeback in style. The war between rivaling clans of House Targaryen will wage on after HBO renewed this epic fantasy series for its third season.
House of the Dragon is set almost two centuries after the mothership series Game of Thrones, and it chronicles the downfall of House Targaryen, caused by the devastating war of succession known as the Dance of the Dragons, which saw them destroy their once-powerful house from within.
HBO’s head of drama Francesca Orsi confirmed the show’s renewal and praised the creative masterminds behind it for reaching new heights with the phenomenal second season.
“We are in awe of the dragon-sized effort the entire team has put into the creation of a spectacular season two, with a scope and scale that is only rivaled by its heart. We could not be more thrilled to continue the story of House Targaryen and watch this team burn bright again for Season 3,” said Orsi in a statement.
The eight-episode Season 2 is returning to HBO on June 16, and its ensemble cast includes Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy, Olivia Cooke, Rhys Ifans, Steve Toussaint, Eve Best, Fabien Frankel, Matthew Needham, Sonoya Mizuno, Tom Glynn-Carney, and Ewan Mitchell.
