If you are an American Horror Story fan, then you have probably noticed Ryan Murphy’s subtle links between seasons, which suggest each unique horror story takes place in the same universe. Murphy even shared on his Instagram the idea that each season represents one of the nine circles of hell and that each season is connected in this way. Here is every connection that we spotted:
Murder House
Sarah Paulson’s character, Billie Dean Howard, returns in Hotel when her psychic abilities are requested. Rubber Man has also made an appearance in Apocalypse, although it is unclear whether he will return in future episodes. The detective Jack Colquit also appeared in Freak Show.
Asylum
Lana Winters comes out of retirement in Roanoke to interview Lee about the traumatic events that went down on the show. One of the asylum’s mental patients, Pepper, was previously a member of Elsa Mars’ freak show and her backstory is revealed in Season 4. The evil psychopath Doctor Arden who performs sick experiments on the patients at Barcliffe was also one of the monsters behind Elsa’s snuff movie in Freak Show.
Coven
Queenie stays at the Cortez Hotel in Season 5, where she is brutally murdered by James Patrick Marsh. The witches also return in the brand new season Apocalypse.
Freak Show
As mentioned, Freak Show ties in with Asylum and chronologically is the season which takes place the earliest. Twisty the Clown also briefly makes an appearance in Cult.
Hotel
Queenie from Coven stays at the hotel. Psychic Billie Dean Howard from Murder House also makes an appearance on Devil’s night.
Roanoake
As mentioned, Roanoake survivor Lee shares her story with Lana Winters in an attempt to reach out to her daughter. Lady Gaga’s character is the original supreme, which connects the series to Coven.
Cult
Cult is vastly different from the other seasons and seems detached from the others. Twisty the Clown from Freak Show, however, does appear in his own comic book series at the start of the season.
Apocalypse
So far, Rubber Man from Murder House and the witches from Coven have made an appearance. We are waiting to see if this is the season where all story lines converge and each season comes together.
