Shortly after the news of Hunter Schafer’s casting in Blade Runner 2099 started circling online, Amazon Prime Video made things official. Euphoria actress will join the Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh in the latest extension to the Blade Runner universe.
Inspired by Philip K. Dick’s seminal novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, Blade Runner 2099 will be set in the same universe as Ridley Scott’s classic Blade Runner and its sequel Blade Runner 2049, directed by Denis Villeneuve and starring Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford.
Plot details are being kept under wraps, but this series is expected to serve as the follow-up to Blade Runner 2049. Silka Luisa will serve as its showrunner and executive producer, alongside Alcon Entertainment’s Andrew Kosove, Broderick Johnson, Ben Roberts, Scott Free Production’s Ridley Scott, David W. Zucker, and Clayton Krueger, plus Jonathan van Tulleken (Shōgun), who’s directing the first two episodes.
Hunter Schafer rose to prominence while playing Jules Vaughn in the hit HBO teen drama Euphoria, and she took the role in Blade Runner 2099 while waiting for Season 3 to kick off production. She kept rising through the ranks with the role in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes and will next be seen in Tilman Singer’s horror Cuckoo and Yorgos Lanthimos’ dark comedy Kinds of Kindness this summer.
