James Buckley Almost Died on the Set of “The Inbetweeners”

James Buckley in "The Inbetweeners"

The Inbetweeners‘ James Buckley (aka Jay) almost had a terrible accident on set.

Do you remember that horrific scene in “Field Trip” when Neil ends up punching a fish to death, while Simon stands naked calling for Carly? No matter how many times we re-read that sentence, it never fails to make us cringe.

As part of the scene Jay fires a flare gun to call for the coastguards to pull them approximately 20 meters to shore. When filming the scene, Blake Harrison (Neil) revealed to The Sun that Buckley had some trouble understanding the producers’ directions on how to use the prop. In fact, he had so much trouble with the prop that he was a split second away from a terrible accident.

“He genuinely could have died,” Harrison said of the scene. “He looked down the barrel of it before it goes off, and we were told don’t ever do that because if it goes off, it has the force of a grenade. So when James does that and half a second later it comes out, that’s how close we were to recasting.”

Luckily, none of the cast ended up firing a flare fun into their face, which means they were all able to reunite for The Inbetweeners reunion special on January 1.
