Jodie Whittaker Reveals the Inspiration Behind Her Doctor Who Costume

Jodie Whittaker has revealed where the inspiration for her costume came from on Doctor Who. 

Whittaker will be the thirteenth doctor and the first ever female actress to take on the role. At Comoc-Con last weekend, she spoke about her costume and how she finding the right look for her character.

She explained that the inspiration had come from a black and white photo of a woman in short trousers, boots and braces walking “deep in thought”.

“The costume kind of felt that it could come from anywhere, and it should feel like that,” she explained. “I didn’t want something that felt too neat and tailored.”

“This picture was black-and-white, so I don’t know what era that picture is from. It felt like such a wonderful expression, in one image, of timelessness, purpose and inclusiveness. All in one simple look.”

“It didn’t feel you needed to be a certain shape, or age, or gender, to wear it. And that’s mainly where it came from.”
