Modern Family is one of the most beloved sitcoms of the 21st century, and Judy Greer came very close to being a part of its amazing cast. The acclaimed actress recently revealed she rejected the offer to audition for the role of Claire because she wasn’t ready to play a mom of three at that point in her career.
Greer recently sat down for an interview with Jesse Tyler Ferguson on his Dinner’s On Me podcast, and it turned out they share an unexpected connection. Green could’ve starred in Modern Family alongside Ferguson, but she rejected the audition for the role of Claire Dunphy, which ultimately went to Julie Bowen.
Greer told Ferguson that she was at that stage in her career when she was just starting to play moms, but she still wasn’t ready to accept such a role in a huge TV project.
“I was like, ‘I think I’m not going to audition for it.’ I was really torn about it, but I ended up obviously not. Who knows if I would have even gotten it anyway, but I was just like, ‘I don’t know if I want to be America’s mom yet.’ [It] felt so limiting compared to what I was doing already,” Greer explained.
Despite rejecting Modern Family, Greer went on to star in many other acclaimed TV projects. We’ve recently seen her in The First Lady, Reboot, and White House Plumbers, and she’ll next be seen in the Apple TV+ sports comedy Rambler & the Birdie Machine.
