Keira Knightley’s filmography includes several beloved period dramas, but there’s something different about her next one. The British actress is ready to give television a shot with the role in Apple TV+ series The Essex Serpent.

This period drama series is based on Sarah Perry’s novel of the same way, and it centers on a newly widowed woman who becomes obsessed by local myths about a mythical creature known as the Essex Serpent after moving from London to a small village in Essex.

In addition to playing the lead role, Knightley will also serve as one of the executive producers. The Essex Serpent will be based on the script by the Mrs Wilson scribe Anna Symon and directed by Clio Barnard (Dark River and The Selfish Giant).

Keira Knightley is no stranger to period dramas, and she previously starred in Pride & Prejudice, Atonement, and many more moves of this genre. What sets The Essex Serpent apart is the fact it’s her first lead TV role, since her filmography mostly includes movie projects.
