Seeing Kevin Costner leave Yellowstone was quite a shocker for its fans, but the door remains open for his return. The Emmy-winning actor said he’s open to coming back as John Dutton under the right circumstances because this character is still very close to his heart.
Yellowstone will return for the second half of its fifth season in November, but Costner won’t lead its cast this time around. He took a break to work on the western film Horizon: An American Saga, which he directed and co-wrote in addition to leading it, and he’s plotting several more sequels set in this universe.
Costner walked away from Yellowstone to focus on this passion project, but he told Savannah Guthrie on Today that he’s open to returning as John Dutton in the future.
“I’ve supported that thing and I’ve loved it. It’s been really important to me. I would love to go back under the right circumstances I think that all of us want… Saying there’s a chance, there’s always a chance. I love the thing. You’ve got to be really clear about that,” said Costner.
The fifth season will serve as the grand finale of Yellowstone, but the story of the Dutton family will live on through several spin-offs, including 1923 starring Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford.
