Adaptations of Judy Blume’s novels are having a moment in Hollywood, and Netflix is plotting another one. Lovie Simone & Michael Cooper Jr. landed lead roles in the upcoming adaptation of Blume’s beloved 1975 novel Forever.

Almost five decades since its original release, Blume’s seminal novel is finally getting its modern-day reimagination. The series will be set in Los Angeles in 2018 and center on two Black teens “exploring romance and their identities through the awkward journey of being each other’s firsts.”

Brock Akil, will serve as the show’s executive producer and showrunner, and she can’t wait to put her own spin on the iconic source material.

“Judy Blume’s ability to capture the real emotions we experience during the various rites of passage of our youth influenced my life choices and writing voice. I’m honored to reimagine one of my favorite books, Forever,” said Akil in a statement.

Lovie Simone, who previously played the lead role in Greenleaf and will soon appear in the Apple TV+ series Manhunt, will portray the fiery track star Keisha Clark. She’ll be joined by Michael Cooper Jr. (On the Come Up) in the role of Justin Edwards, an aspiring basketball player, who’s secretly a nerd at heart.
