The cast of the ’90s sitcom Martin reunited at this year’s Emmy Awards, bringing this series back into the spotlight. Martin Lawrence decided to tap into that nostalgia and develop a contemporary origin story Young Martin, inspired by his character from the original show.

Co-crated and led by Martin Lawrence, Martin ran on Fox between 1992 and 1997, and it’s coming back almost three decades later. Just like The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air before it, this 90s sitcom is getting a modern-day prequel, which centers on a titular character during his early days.

Young Martin will take us to modern-day Detroit and explore themes of family, friendship, and coming of age through the tale of Martin Payne, a spirited teenager whose journey is characterized by ambition, humor, and genuine compassion for those around him.

This is the inaugural TV project for WonderHill Studios, and their CEO Marvin Peart said it’s an honor to bring back this show that defined culture and positivity during the 90s.

Martin reflected a real group of friends from our community that wound up on TV screens all over the world… He influenced my path in the entertainment industry and it’s an honor to partner with Martin and his younger self and share him with the next generation of fans,” said Peart in a statement.
