Marvel has given us another star-studded ensemble film with Eternals, but this superhero flick struggled to impress critics and fans alike. The Oscar-winning screenwriter John Ridley recently revealed he was developing a TV series based on Eternals comics before Disney decided to make a film instead.

Ridley, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of 12 Years of Slave, was tapped by ABC to develop a mystery superhero project back in 2015. This series never saw the light of day, but he revealed he was actually plotting an Eternals TV show during a recent appearance on the Comic Book Club podcast.

Ridley said that his version was “a good version”, but added that Eternals are a pretty hard property to develop and that he understands why his series was eventually shelved.

“The best thing to happen for everybody was that it didn’t happen with me because I don’t know that it would have been entertaining… Populist, which is great for a lot of the work I do, but this needed to be a little bit more popular,” said Ridley.

Eternals was eventually directed by the Oscar-winning filmmaker Chloé Zhao, and it starred Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani,Brian Tyree Henry, Barry Keoghan, Salma Hayek, and Angelina Jolie.
