After finding success with his stand-up special Natural Selection, Matt Rife is back in business with Netflix. He’s developing a workplace comedy for the streaming giant, which he’ll also lead, in addition to signing a deal to develop two new specials for Netflix.
Partnering up with Rife for two more specials was a no-brainer for Netflix, given the success of Natural Selection. This comedy special attracted 10+ million views in its first two weeks and reached the top 10 42 countries, and its follow-up is expected to premiere on Netflix later this year after shooting at The Comedy Zone in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Rife is also developing a gym/workplace comedy series for Netflix, and plot details are currently being kept under wraps. In addition to writing this comedy under his new development deal with a streamer, Rife will also take one of the lead roles.
Rife previously guest starred on hit sitcoms Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Fresh Off the Boat, and he’s been looking forward to making a transition to acting for quite some time.
“I love acting just as much, if not more than standup. I just haven’t been doing it as long and I haven’t been able to get my foot in the door… Now that I have the freedom in success via stand-up, it opens up avenues in other areas that I am passionate about, like film and television,” Rife previously told Deadline.
