Max has given us one of their most delightful comedy shows with Our Flag Means Death, but they quickly took it away. The comedy series led by Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi, set during the Golden Age of Piracy, is dead in the water after two seasons.
Our Flag Means Death put a fictional twist on a tale of Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby), a gentleman-turned-pirate trying to make a name for himself with the crew of Revenge. His life takes a wild turn when he runs into the famed pirate captain Blackbeard (Taika Waititi), and they end up forming a complex relationship that puzzled historians for centuries.
In addition to Darby and Waititi, the show’s ensemble cast also included Samson Kayo, Vico Ortiz, Ewen Bremner, Joel Fry, Matthew Maher, Kristian Nairn, Con O’Neill, David Fane, Samba Schutte, Nat Faxon, and Leslie Jones.
The cancelation was announced in a statement by a Max spokesperson, which reads “While Max will not be moving forward with a third season of Our Flag Means Death, we are so proud of the joyous, hilarious, and heartfelt stories that creator David Jenkins, Taika Waititi, Rhys Darby, Garrett Basch, Dan Halsted, Adam Stein, Antoine Douaihy, and the entire superb cast and crew brought to life.”
Showrunner David Jenkins previously revealed he developed a three-season arc of Our Flag Means Death, but it’s unclear if he’s planning to shop it elsewhere.
