Many A-list stars made a shift from film to television in recent years, and Michael Fassbender is finally ready to take that step. The Oscar-nominated actor is circling the lead role in the espionage thriller series The Department, directed by George Clooney.

The Department draws inspiration from the French spy series The Bureau, which centered on a member of the French Secret Services, who struggles to let his false identity go after returning home from a six-year undercover mission in Damascus and finds himself stuck in the double game between the French agency DGSE and the CIA.

Showtime has already given the English-language remake a straight-to-series order, and they attracted an impressive creative team. George Clooney will produce the series alongside his Smokehouse Pictures’ partner Grant Heslov, in addition to coming on board as a director. MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios will also produce this promising project.

The Department will mark Fassbender’s first major TV role since he made a name for himself in Hollywood. The two-time Academy Award nominee led David Fincher’s The Killer and Taika Waititi’s Next Goal Wins just last year, and he’ll next be seen in the Irish film Kneecap and the martial arts comedy Kung Fury 2.
