Most Doctor Who companions stick around with the Time Lord for years, but that won’t be the case with Millie Gibson. The Coronation Street star shockingly exited the hit sci-fi series and will be replaced by Varada Sethu as Ncuti Gatwa‘s next sidekick.

Gibson made her debut as Ruby Sunday in the 2023 Christmas special “The Church on Ruby Road”, and is expected to return in the upcoming fourteenth season, but her time on the show will be short-lived. When Doctor Who returns for Season 15, Andor star Varada Sethu will replace Gibson as Gatwa’s main companion.

No official reason was given for Gibson’s departure, but she seemed to be pretty excited to join the series and share her character Ruby Sunday with the passionate Doctor Who fanbase.

“They’re probably the most supportive fan base that I’ve met so far. Anyone that comes into the world, they want to embrace them – they want to know everything about them. They can see no wrong for them. I just hope they’re happy with my work,” Gibson told Royal Television Society back in December.

Ncuti Gatwa addressed her departure on Instagram by posting a photo of himself and Gibson, which he captioned with the words “my lil”, followed by Gemini and heart emojis.
