The period drama The Serpent Queen is returning to Starz later this year, and it’s bringing many new characters our way. The Samantha Morton-led series will feature ten new cast members when it comes back, starting with the Oscar nominee Minnie Driver.

The Serpent Queen centers on Catherine de Medici, who overcame all odds to become one of the most powerful and longest-serving rulers in French history. Season 2 will see her going toe-to-toe with the infamous “Virgin Queen”, Elizabeth I, played by Driver (Good Will Hunting).

The lineup of newly added series regulars will also include Angus Imrie (The Crown) as Henry IV, Emma McDonald (Moonhaven) as Catherine’s confidant Rahima, Stanley Morgan (I Used to Be Famous) as King Charles’ younger brother Anjou, and Philippine Velge (Station Eleven) as Catherine’s eldest daughter Margot.

Rosalie Craig (1899), Isobel Jesper Jones (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes), Bill Milner (A Small Light), Ashley Thomas (Black Cake), and Alexandre Willaume (The Wheel of Time) will also star in recurring roles.

The Serpent Queen was created for Starz by writer and executive producer Justin Haythe, who adapted it from Leonie Frieda’s book Catherine de Medici: Renaissance Queen of France. The show’s second season still doesn’t have an official release date, but it’s expected to premiere later this year.
